Harry Styles on My Policeman, “It’s not a gay love story but a tender human story about love”

Grammy-winning Harry Styles is gearing up for one of his most anticipated releases, my policeman. A romantic period drama set in 1957 Britain. The film shows the love triangle of a gay policeman Tom (Harry Styles), a teacher Marion (Emma Corrin) and a museum curator Patrick (David Dawson).

Tom marries Marion while still in love with Patrick, taking them on an emotional journey. As the game of hide and seek results in nostalgia and regret, years later, in 1990, the trio have one last chance to right their past mistakes as they reunite under dire circumstances. Directed by Michael Grandage, my policeman is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts.

Harry Styles says he’s proud to be a part of the upcoming film, my policeman. The story completely moved him and he decided to approach director Michael Grandage himself. When meeting Grandage, Styles showed up with all the lines memorized and Grandage immediately got his Tom.

Revealing what drew him to the story, Styles said: “It’s not like, ‘It’s a gay story about these guys who are gay’. It’s about love and wasted time. for me. It’s obviously pretty unfathomable now to think, ‘Oh, you can’t be gay. It was illegal (in the ’50s). I think everyone, including myself, has their own path to understanding sexuality and feeling more comfortable with it.

While the film has intimate scenes, Styles believes it focuses more on the emotional love between the gay couple, rather than the physical sexuality.

Sharing how director Micheal Grandage wanted to portray gay intimacy, the actor shared, “A lot of the gay sex in film is two guys getting into it, and that kind of takes away the tenderness. There will be, I imagine, people watching it who were very much alive at that time when it was illegal to be gay, and Michael wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.
