Hannibal’s Gay Love Story?

The writers behind Hannibal the television series opened with the show’s possible gay love story.

Nearly a decade after the series debuted, fans are still speculating about the main character’s love interest.

And you can’t blame them, Hannibal and Will Graham were getting pretty close.

Has been Hannibal just a little gay?

The charismatic Mads Mikkelsen starred as Hannibal in this thrilling prequel series.

Opposite him was the striking Hugh Dancy playing Will Graham.

Together, the pair had remarkable on-screen chemistry.

The series followed the origin story of one of cinema’s most memorable villains, Hannibal Lector.

As the series developed, they formed a striking bond as friends that evolved with the complexity of the cases and Hannibal’s crimes.

Their chemistry developed to the point that Will Graham was led to ask the question “Is Hannibal in love with me?”

The series even ended with the two characters locked in a passionate embrace as they came to terms with their fates.

Several scenes across the series have captured the two locked in moments of intensity that left viewers thinking there must be more to these two than meets the eye.

It’s an idea that the actors themselves have toyed with.

“We actually did some takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other.”

“It was a little too obvious – it was almost a kiss,” Mikkelsen said. Vulture one year ago.

“Me and Hugh were like, ‘Why not? We’ve got some takes. Let’s do one. That could be cool.

Bryan Fuller, executive producer of Hannibal spoke to Weekly entertainment recently on the potential romance of the two characters.

“It started as a sort of fascination with how straight guys interact with each other in a romantic way that isn’t sexual,” he told the magazine.

“I originally didn’t want to misrepresent the Thomas Harris characters as they clearly have heterosexual leanings in the source material.”

“But like kids these days, that sexuality has become a lot more fluid over the course of the show.”

His statements were true to the characters portrayed in the series.

While there was nothing inherently “gay” or physically intimate between the two, it was the intensity of the characters and their bond that captivated viewers.

But it’s this intensity fueled by the writing and the actors themselves that led him to layer stranger elements into the Hannibal/Will Graham storyline.

“They really helped extract that romance from the page into something that was actionable,” he said of the cast.

Is Hannibal in love with me?

“It became a scriptwriting dialogue that was, ‘Is Hannibal in love with me?’ and ‘Do you feel bad for him?’ “, he described.

“I was just following the lead of the actors, instead of having a gay agenda.”

It was a question that was never answered. But it was a subtext that the writing team was happy to keep.

“It was finally in the text and it was no longer in the realm of metaphor or suggestion.”

While Fuller was happy with how the show and its characters ended, he regrets how far he could have pushed their relationship.

“I had to do it again, I might suggest we kiss and see how it plays out,” he said of the couple.

Not so sure about their romance?
