Baahubali Producer Shobu Yarlagadda Calls Resul Pookutty’s ‘Gay Love Story’ Comment on RRR: ‘Is That a Bad Thing?’

Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s comments calling SS Rajamouli’s RRR a “gay love story” prompted a harsh reaction from Baahubali’s producer, Shobu Yarlagadda. In a series of tweets on Monday, Resul called the Ram Charan and Jr NTR film a “gay love story” after filmmaker Munish Bhardwaj called it “rubbish”.

Later that day, Shobu brought up Resul’s comments and said he didn’t think RRR was a gay love story, but asked that even if it was, how was it a bad thing ? His tweet read, “I don’t think @RRRMovie is a gay love story like you say, but even if it was, is ‘gay love story’ a bad thing? ? How to justify its use? Extremely disappointed that someone of your accomplishments could stoop so low!”

Resul, in another tweet, shared that he agreed with Shobhu and that there was “nothing wrong even if it was (a gay love story)”. He also mentioned that he didn’t mean to offend anyone. Absolutely okay. Absolutely nothing wrong even if it was. I just quoted2 my friend, a joke that already exists in the public domain and nothing else. There is no demeaning factor to that. You don’t have to take it seriously Shobu, I meant no offense2 to the stakeholders. I rest my cause here!

Resul won the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing in 2009 for his work on Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. It also won a BAFTA Award for Best Sound the same year.

SS Rajamouli’s RRR was released in theaters earlier this year and became one of the most successful Indian films of 2022. The film also garnered a lot of appreciation from international audiences, after its release on Netflix.
